Totowa MMA: A look inside NJ United Mixed Martial Arts Academy

Push Yourself, or Play? #Whynotboth!

You can develop some of the best relationships of your life with people who know how to help you and push you to reach fitness and self-defense goals!

I always feel sad when I see people working out while simultaneously keeping track of time or the “outside world.” They check the wall-clock, check their phones, get pulled-into social media on their phones, and that adds to the high drop-out rate that traditional gyms often have. However, one incredible benefit of training martial arts like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai is the fact that they’re absolutely partner-dependent arts! What happens when you’re working toward a technical, self-defense-oriented goal with good people? Your knowledge, confidence, and skill will skyrocket in ways you’d never expect.

“Hey, how do I get out of this again?” It doesn’t matter if your main training-goal is fitness, self-defense, or competition. Good training partners are a must!

We tend to forget an obvious truth that young kids know: You cannot genuinely be at play if you have a mentality of “punching-in” to playtime. Likewise, you cannot learn realistic self-defense without training partners who react realistically yet responsibly. Sometime I find that people carry a misconception that MMA gyms are filled with “people who are trying to tear each other’s heads off” or something like that. Well, thanks to Hollywood and flashy UFC ads, I can understand having that misconception. But when you think about it, there’s no way you’re going to have healthy, unparalleled workouts and learn valuable skills if you aren’t training with people who:

  • know how to practice and drill realistically yet safely,
  • are open about sharing knowledge and testing strategies,
  • can develop awesome relationships with you . . .
  • . . . and push you to grow in technical, athletic ways that can’t be gained from counting reps on a machine or miles on a treadmill!

Martial arts gyms are the only places where I’ve seen men and women of all ages engaged with the focus and enjoyment of a young kid at kickball, or a dog chasing-down a tennis ball. You will also be pushed to improve, but the results you get will make you want to push your own self as well!
