It’s reassuring to know that in case you should ever run into an attacker that knows “magic” your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu will still work! Check out this cool video of Criss Angel visiting Randy Couture’s academy to learn some details about protecting his neck during a stunt that he is performing… Notice how it only takes a few seconds for a properly applied choke to render someone completely defenseless. We’re going to be having Open Mat training for NJ United MMA students Thanksgiving morning at 10am! Come and train before you go enjoy the holiday with family and/or friends.
Last weekend NJ United Mixed Martial Arts student Greg J. brought home the championship belt from one of the toughest grappling tournaments in NJ. The North American Grapplers Association (NAGA) hosts events throughout the United States, drawing some of the most talented grapplers from the area to each event. Purple Belt Greg J. represented NJ United winning the Master’s Lightweight Expert division, a bracket that consisted of some very technical and experienced purple and brown belts from the NJ, NY, and PA area. Although Greg was one of the lightest competitors (156 lbs.) in the division (up to 175 lbs.) he showed that technique beats size and strength as he was able to control his opponents on his way to winning his first championship belt!
Greg J. is looking forward testing himself in December at the Grapplers Quest, another one of the toughest grappling tournaments in NJ. Check out Greg’s semi-final match and his sick armbar against a tough opponent from Pennsylvania.
Great job Christina DeNichilo on winning 1st place at the EndGame Submission Grappling Tournament Sunday! Christina had a nice mounted triangle to submit her opponent to win 1st place in the women’s division. Showing the true warrior that she is, Christina wanted to test herself against the men and lost a tough battle in her first match going even with her opponent before coming up short after 18 MINUTES! Great job Christina, next time she takes 1st place against the men too! Photos by d-LinkPhotography
WARNING: This Video Contains Graphic Content… More and more New Jersey teens are playing a game called “Knockout” where the goal is to KO an unsuspecting person on the street with one punch. As repulsive as that sounds it gets even worse. The targets of the knockout game are not only men, but a growing number of women are victims of this heinous crime. The best way to not become a victim… Prepare yourself… Fight back against the knockout game, train Mixed Martial Arts, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai kickboxing, boxing, and wrestling and teach these kids the lesson that their parents never did. Be aware of your surroundings. Situational awareness is one of the best ways to avoid becoming a victim of the knockout game. Some of the best up and coming grapplers in the NJ, NY, PA area tested themselves Saturday at the North American Grapplers Association. The tournament was held at the National Guard Armory in West Orange, NJ and the competition was fierce. NJ United sent five competitors into the competition and at the end of the day we came home with 5 medals! Everyone that competed left everything they had on the mat and I’m very impressed with the heart and determination that was shown.
NJU Blue Belts Genaro Rojas and Rob Sova closed out the Men’s Masters No Gi Intermediate division, with Genaro winning 3 tough matches to take the GOLD while Rob won the Silver medal. The teammates decided to have the match in the finals and Genaro edged out the win 2-0 with a takedown in the final 20 seconds. Rob also won the GOLD medal in the Men’s Masters Blue Belt division, submitting his opponent in the finals with a nice choke from the back!
Purple Belt Greg Joshua won his first GOLD medal and took home the Championship Belt in the Men’s Masters No Gi Expert division, defeating both of his opponents, including a nasty arm lock from the guard in his semi final match. Winning a Championship Belt has always been a goal for Greg J. and no one deserves it more than him! Great job Greg J.!
Blue Belt David D’Angelo also came home with the Silver medal submitting his opponent in the semi finals with a perfect mounted triangle choke, a submission rarely seen in the heavyweight division. Keep up the great work David!
