Totowa MMA: A look inside NJ United Mixed Martial Arts Academy

Technique of the Week

Check out JT Torres showing a nice back take from the deep half guard. JT is one of the best Black Belts in the WORLD and is also a good friend of NJ United Mixed Martial Arts. JT also has a new website coming out soon….

2013 Pan American No Gi Jiu Jitsu Championships

Congratulations to everyone that went out there and put it all on the line today at the 2013 IBJJF No Gi Pan Ams! Every match was a battle and I’m very impressed with the amount of heart that all of the athletes showed. The most important thing is that you leave it all out there on the mats. Steve Ficca won the Silver medal in the Purple Belt Adult Heavyweight division with two impressive wins by submission before losing a tough match in the finals by ref decision. Rich Pocsi won the Bronze medal in the Blue Belt Masters Super Heavyweight division, an impressive accomplishment as Rich is officially a white belt, but stepped up to take the challenge against more experienced grapplers. Jay Hayes also won the Silver medal in the Black Belt Masters Middleweight division.

JT Torres Seminar This Wednesday!

JT Torres will be teaching a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Seminar at NJ United Mixed Martial Arts this Wednesday, September 25th from 7-9pm!  JT is one of only 5 Americans to ever medal at the prestigious IBJJF World Championships in the HISTORY of Jiu Jitsu. JT also recently received an invite to the 2013 ADCC World Championships in China and made the cover of this month’s issue of Jiu Jitsu Magazine! This is an amazing opportunity to learn from one of the best Black Belts in the WORLD!

Monday Night Classes

The back room is officially DONE and I couldn’t be happier! There was lot’s of great training going on today at NJ United Mixed Martial Arts. Instructor Derek taught an excellent Little Ninjas and Little Spartans class. The Ninjas and Spartans are really turning into some skilled little martial artists!

We covered some important details on controlling and attacking from the back in BJJ 101 class. Instructor Chris and Coach Dan were working the guys hard on Mat 2 in Muay Thai 101 class and then CAP Muay Thai Sparring class. Everyone rolling at CAP No Gi Jiu Jitsu class had some competitive battles out there on the mats.

We finished off the night with a tough Competition Team class! Lot’s of great wrestling techniques and insight from Coach Rusty to start off the class. He’s definitely one of the best coaches around and we’re lucky to have such a high level D1 collegiate wrestler at NJU to share some knowledge! Lot’s of live training on single leg attacks and defenses and situational training during class.

Then came time for conditioning. It’s awesome to see everyone pushing each other to make themselves better during the 15 laps of stairs, great job guys! Then we wrapped up the night with some strength and conditioning… NJU! See you all tomorrow!

Great Night of Classes

What an awesome night tonight at NJ United Mixed Martial Arts! The Tiny Ninjas class was great, we had 11 – 3 & 4 year old students all practicing their jabs, crosses, and push kicks. Everyone was great today and I’m proud of how focused all the Tiny Ninjas were. We also got to play a fun game of “sumo challenge” at the end of class. Instructor Corey taught a great Little Spartans class on Mat 2 while the Little Ninjas had an excellent class on Mat 1. I’m always so impressed with how quickly 5 to 7 year old kids can learn combinations and execute jiu jitsu technique. We had 5 great adult classes following the Ninjas and Spartans. Instructor Gil taught a great Boxing 101 class and followed up with some great training in the MMA 101 class. We got to break down some important details of positions in CAP BJJ class, BJJ 101, and No Gi Jiu Jitsu class. Can’t wait for BJJ 101 at 11am tomorrow!

MMA 101

New Blue Belts

Congratulations to Ahmed, Vitaliy, Justin, Vince (aka Arm Hunter), Samara, Andrey and Rob for earning their blue belts in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu recently. I’m very proud of all of them, they’re extremely hard workers who definitely put their time in and earned their promotions. Great job guys!

Kids Martial Arts Classes

Check out some pictures of our 3 and 4 year old Tiny Ninja’s practicing their “sumo challenge” game. These kids are getting tough for sure! Our Little Spartans (8-13 year olds) got some great drills in and learned some awesome technique after the Ninjas finished up working their takedowns. I’m really enjoying seeing the Spartans tighten up their transitions on the ground. The flow drills are really starting to develop everyone’s overall skills. Great job guys!
