Could you defend yourself if someone pulled a gun on you? Self defense in Wayne, NJ

The fact of the matter is, most people have no clue what they would do. Now in most situations the intelligent decision is to comply with the attacker if you are being mugged. There is no price that can be placed on your life, so handing over your wallet would be the wise choice. But when the attackers’ intentions are not to mug you, you may have to react and disarm the assailant.

Recently in the news we heard a story of a delusional man in Arizona that attempted to assassinate Democratic Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. Luckily Giffords survived, but six other people lost their lives that day. Thankfully, vigilant citizens acted quickly to prevent the situation from escalating. This leads to my question for you, could you defend yourself if someone pulled a gun on you?

Now when people think of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu they most likely think of fancy chokes, armbars, and leg locks. But few people realize that the most important techniques of BJJ are the self defense techniques that you don’t see in Mixed Martial Arts. Although Brazilian Jiu Jitsu first gained popularity through its success in MMA, BJJ is also a comprehensive self defense style with many practical applications in real life.

As martial arts instructors, it is not only our job to teach our students how to fight or how to win “sport” competitions. It is our duty to prepare our students to defend themselves, but hope that they will never have to encounter a situation like what happened in Tucson, Arizona this weekend. Here is a self defense technique that could one day save your life.

Hard work

Hard work beats talent when talent refuses to work hard…

If you are new to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Mixed Martial Arts, or Muay Thai kickboxing, this is the most important quote that will lead you to success. You could be fast, strong, and have all the physical attributes in the world, but if you don’t dedicate yourself to training consistently, you will soon fall behind your training partners. These physical traits may give you success in the beginning, but it is the dedicated student that puts the time in, practices technique, and pays attention to detail that will eventually have greater success in any of these Martial Arts. Every day when you wake up in the morning just remember, hard work beats talent when talent refuses to work hard…..
