Day 4: NJ United Kids Summer Camp

Day four started with the kids working their escapes from the bottom position in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Class. We had a great game of king/queen of the closed guard, where students have to practice their sweeps from the bottom position to reverse their opponents. These kids are getting really, really good, it’s amazing to see how fast they learn!

Coach Rusty Reed was back to teach another killer Wrestling Class Thursday at 11:00am. We went over some simple setups to the single leg takedown, with a few different ways to put your opponent on their back. Coach Sean will be back tomorrow afternoon to help tie together everything we’ve learned this week!

After lunch Coach Dominyka gave the kids an Arts & Crafts Class in “Origami,” an ancient Japanese art of paper folding to create a finished sculpture. Each student added their own personality into their “Origami” creation! It was a fun class for sure!

We wrapped up the day learning one of the most powerful moves in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, the triangle choke. The kids then played a rapid fire king/queen of the closed guard game, and everyone really trained super hard. These ninjas and spartans have put some serious time in improving their jiu jitsu skills! Looking forward to tomorrow!

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at UFC Fight Night 47

It’s pretty cool to see Cole Miller using Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at this past weekend’s UFC Fight Night! The American Top Team Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt caught Jorge Gurgel with a triangle choke from spider guard a few years back…

Metamoris IV

If you haven’t seen Metamoris 4 yet, check out the videos here. There were some awesome exchanges throughout the entire event. UFC star Chael Sonnen looked very tough to sweep and submit, but all it takes is one mistake against someone like Andre Galvao and it’s all over. Saulo Ribeiro and Rodrigo “Comprido” Medeiros was one of my favorite matches of the event. So much to study from watching these two legends go at it for 20 minutes! Keenan Cornelius’ style is so cool to watch, but his guard passing and mount was the most impressive given how good Vinny Magalhaes is. Josh Barnett was able to tap Dean Lister with a nasty submission, something no one has been able to do to Lister in an impressive 16 years. and Garry Tonon is a monster on the mats, making quick work of Kit Dale and then calling out the great Kron Gracie! Jeff Glover and Baret Yoshida was the secret match that had some very interesting exchanges between two very technical grapplers. I can’t wait for Metamoris 5!

Congratulations to Little Ninja Zachary for winning the the Kids 40-49 lbs. Intermediate division in both the no gi and gi divisions! Zach’s takedowns and guard passing was on point against some very tough competition. NJ United Little Ninja Giovanni also competed and got some great experience in his first tournament. He lost a tough match on points but is very excited for his next opportunity to compete. Keep up the great work Little Ninjas and Spartans!

The Prodigy

Much respect to one of the American pioneers in the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts, BJ Penn. BJ is someone that I looked up to when I first started BJJ in 2003. He was the first non-Brazilian to win the World Championships, with only one other American winning it since then. He was the former UFC lightweight and welterweight World Champion, defeating Matt Hughes when Hughes was at the top of his game. His contributions to BJJ and MMA will live on forever.
