Totowa MMA: A look inside NJ United Mixed Martial Arts Academy

Kimura details

Hey guys, here’s a video of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt Stephan Kesting showing a few details about the kimura. Kesting is referencing the Antonio Nogueira vs. Frank Mir fight from UFC 140, breaking it down from the scramble that eventually led to the submission. The finish of the kimura from side control is the same finish that is required for your curriculum test for this month. Watch how a fancy setup in a MMA fight still ends up with the same basic finish from side control that you learn as a white belt. At the end of the day it’s all about the basics! Enjoy!

Christmas Eve schedule

Hey everyone, we will be having a modified schedule for Saturday, December 24th. We will be having open mat training from 9am-10:30am. Come in and train!

Learning from the Master himself!

As martial artists we are constantly trying to improve ourselves and strive to be the best that we can be. This theory applies not only to improving our martial arts technique, but also in our strength as instructors. Our ability to pass on our knowledge to our students can be done in many different ways, depending on whether the student is a visual learner, audible learner, etc… The only way to improve oneself as an instructor is to seek out and learn from the best.

This week Master Jay, Coach Corey, and Coach Derek are adding to our skills as instructors by learning some amazing teaching strategies from Master Lloyd Irvin and Master Marcos Avellan from Freestyle Fighting Academy in Miami, FL. Here Master Lloyd Irvin shares some of his knowledge that has produced UFC fighters Dominick Cruz, Phil Davis, Mike Easton, and Brandon Vera as well as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belts JT Torres, Jimmy Harbison, Jared Weiner, Brad Court, Mike Fowler, and myself. NJ United Mixed Martial Arts is proud to represent Team Lloyd Irvin and is always looking to improve our academy in every way possible!

Check out Wilson Reis’ last fight!

Congratulations to Wilson Reis on his recent win at WFE 11 in Brazil. Wilson is one of the instructors at BJJ United in Philadelphia, PA where I received my Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Congratulations Wilson!
