Totowa MMA: A look inside NJ United Mixed Martial Arts Academy

Sao Paulo Pass

Check out this video of one of my instructors, Jared Weiner (head instructor at BJJ United), showing the Sao Paulo pass. The Sao Paulo pass gained alot of popularity a few years back when Wilson Reis (instructor at BJJ United) was using this technique on just about everyone in competition. This is a more advanced technique that you can use to open up the guard. Enjoy….

GSP talks Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and the Kimono

Watch this interview with UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre talking about the importance of training jiu jitsu and training with the kimono (also referred to as the “gi”).

There are alot of people who criticize training in the kimono because they say it doesn’t make you better at MMA. The real reason behind the criticism is these people don’t have the dedication or the skills to earn a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Don’t take my word for it, hear it from a guy who is arguably the best Mixed Martial Arts fighter in the world!!!

“I think the gi (kimono) is good because it makes you better at escapes and makes your game tighter. With the gi there is more technique, so your brain is working more, so you become a more quick thinker. Your timing is better. The one thing jiu jitsu teaches you over the years is to be humble….” – George St. Pierre (UFC welterweight world champion)

Congratulations Jared Weiner!!!

Congratulations to Jared Weiner for winning his Black Belt division at the Chicago Open this weekend. For those of you who don’t know who Jared is, he is Master Lloyd Irvin’s first ever Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He is the owner and head instructor (along with Wilson Reis) of BJJ United in Philadelphia, PA, and is a very accomplished competitor. Jared and Master Lloyd Irvin promoted me, JT, and Mike Easton to Black Belt in June of ’09 at BJJ United. Here he shows a nice takedown that you can do with the kimono. Jared is one of those old school Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belts that also has good Judo skills. Enjoy….

Jiu Jitsu in Totowa, NJ | 30 Day FREE Trial

Take 30 Days of FREE Jiu Jitsu classes in Totowa, NJ.  If you don’t know what Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is, it is one of the most widely practiced fighting styles seen in the UFC (Mixed Martial Arts).  One of the best things about this amazingly effective fighting style is that it can be practiced by anyone, regardless of their age. One of the founders of what has come to be known as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Helio Gracie, practiced the art into his 90’s!

Here Ron Suayan tells you why NJ United Mixed Martial Arts is the best academy in Northern New Jersey.  At 37 years young, Ron has medaled in just about every jiu jitsu and grappling competition he has entered (and better yet he medals in the 18-29 year old divison, beating up the young guys).

If you have ever doubted that you could go out there and train because you think you are “too old,” then take Ron’s advice and come down and try jiu jitsu, and “see you on the mats….”
