Being a good training partner interview – Jay Hayes

Check out this interview from one of the most popular websites in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, OnTheMat.com, about the importance of your training partners:

http://www.onthemat.com/blogs-posts/jay-hayes-being-good-training-partner

Here is the introduction:

While most forms of marital arts rely solely on katas, forms, and constant repetition, in Brazilian jiu-jitsu most of the stuff we learn and practice must be used with a training partner. Everyday on the mat we come in contact with different people each with their own unique style of doing jiu-jitsu, some providing a great help in our training while some crippling our progression. Over the years there has been a lot of different opinions over what defines a good training partner. So in an effort to find out the mystery to this ongoing question I got the opportunity to interview someone that knows what being a good training partner all about.

Team Lloyd Irvin Black Belt Jay Hayes is a BJJ practitioner that has been doing Brazilian jiu-jitsu for over seven years. With a slew of wins in many tournaments and running one of the best schools in New Jersey ( NJ United MMA), Jay Hayes is considered by many, as one of the best American Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Black Belts out there today. Asides for being a great competitor and coach, Jay has also been the training partner for many notable figures that you see ripping up the tournament scene today and has been quoted by jiu-jitsu phenom  JT “Spiderman” Torres as the guy that has helped him prepare and win at some of the toughest tournaments such as the Pan American Games and Brazilian Nationals.

In this interview Jay give you a fundamental lesson on the detail aspects of what it means to be a good training partner.

Great weekend!!!

Congratulations to everyone from Team Lloyd Irvin for their performances this weekend at the Abu Dhabi Pro Trials!!! Two of my good friends JT Torres and Jimmy Harbison both won 2nd place in their respective divisions.  JT submitted everyone up to the finals where he lost a close match to 2007 World Champion Lucas Lepri.  As a brown belt Jimmy beat 3 black belts including Jiu Jitsu legend Roberto Traven to make it to the finals where he had a close match with Abmar Barbosa that went to ref decision.

Saturday night we had our UFC party which was a huge success!!! We had a great crew that enjoyed some very entertaining fights. I’m really looking forward to the next event!!!  Here is a picture of some of the guys at the table watching UFC 126: Vitor Belfort vs. Anderson Silva
