Totowa MMA: A look inside NJ United Mixed Martial Arts Academy
Congratulations NJU Students!
Congratulations to the NJ United MMA students that competed today at the IBJJF New York Open and NAGA. Brian Wolfe showed a ton of heart bringing home the Silver medal home from City College in NYC after a few tough matches. Over in NJ, Rich Pocsi won the GOLD medal in the No Gi mens division and another GOLD in the white belt division! Everyone that competed left it all out on the mats, great job!
Ben Henderson and the Importance of the Gi (Kimono)
Why is Ben Henderson one of the greatest fighters on the planet? Part of the reason is the UFC Lightweight champion still trains and competes regularly with the kimono in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. It’s no coincidence that four of the current UFC Champions are either brown or black belts in BJJ. The best MMA fighters in the world; GSP, Anderson Silva, Jose Aldo, Junior Dos Santos, Jon Jones and Cain Velasquez all train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with the kimono. So don’t just take my advice, do what the best MMA fighters in the world are doing. Throw on the gi, get on the mats, and work your jiu jitsu technique!

Tuesday Night Classes
The Little Ninjas got some great training in today. We practiced some basic Muay Thai kickboxing combinations on our feet and then worked our key lock during jiu jitsu. Everyone was super focused today, I’m very proud of all the Little Ninjas.
In CAP No Gi Jiu Jitsu class we covered a nice arm drag to double leg takedown and got some good drilling in. We went over some nice attacks from the closed guard. It’s important to have an aggressive attacking closed guard, old school meets new school jiu jitsu!
Competition Team Class
Great Competition Team class tonight, everyone was training hard getting ready for the IBJJF NY Open and NAGA!

Our childrens martial arts program is proven to help students increase confidence, develop solid work ethic, focus, and discipline, while learning effective self defense techniques. At NJ United we developed a system where we work together with parents and teachers to help better develop positive traits in each student. We’re so confident in our kids martial arts program that we are giving away 30 FREE days of classes for all new students with no strings attached!
Along with the amazing “life skills” that your child will gain in our classes, there is also a very important self defense and anti-bullying aspect of our childrens martial arts program. Our kids learn how to protect themselves utilizing techniques from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai kickboxing, judo, wrestling, and boxing. In todays Little Ninjas class we worked on checking leg kicks and following up with a nice two punch combination. Then we worked on our “O Soto Gari” judo trip and then drilled our takedowns. We also played some fun games of red ninja/black ninja and tug of war which is always a great time! The Little Spartans practiced a nice counter to a body kick and drilled taking the back. We got some good live taking the back escape drills and some nice live rolls in at the end of class. We finished off the night with a fun game of horse! Contact us today about our childrens martial arts program and ask about our 30 day FREE trial offer! 973-638-1570.
Congrats Dominyka and JT!
JT and Dominyka medal at Pan Ams!
I want to send a big congrats to friends of NJ United, JT Torres and Dominyka Obelenyte for their performances at the 2013 Pan American Jiu Jitsu Championships in Irvine, CA. Dominyka won the GOLD in the Purple Belt open weight class, the toughest purple belt division of the tournament with the medalists of every weight class from earlier in the day. As if this alone was not impressive enough, she’s accomplished this at only 17 years of age. JT won the Bronze medal in the Black Belt lightweight division, one of the most stacked divisions in the tournament. Check out this article from Gracie Magazine’s online site about Dominyka…

Along with being a great athlete, Dominyka is also a straight “A” student that this year has been accepted into Columbia University in NYC, class of 2017. JT was the youngest American to earn the rank of Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in 2009 and is one of only 5 Americans to ever medal at the IBJJF World Championships in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Black Belt. The dedication, work ethic, and determination that it takes to be successful in martial arts are the same traits that allow kids to be successful in school, and these attributes will be with them for the rest of their lives. This was learned from a young age and instilled in both of them by supportive families and reinforced in kids martial arts programs. There is a lot more to martial arts than learning cool techniques and getting in shape, and we are all fortunate enough to have this as part of our lives….
Dominyka is a the perfect example of how kids martial arts has a positive impact on a child/teenagers life. Currently she represents Marcelo Garcia’s academy in NYC, Dominyka originally began training private lessons with me when she was 10 years old. I was also a training partner with JT since he was 15 years old. I have been able to see both of them turn into two of the most talented Brazilian Jiu Jitsu athletes in the world. On top of being great athletes, they are also great young adults possessing all the qualities needed to be successful in life. Both JT and Dominyka are great role models for children and teenagers and their stories are a perfect example of why parents should enroll their children in kids martial arts programs.
