Totowa MMA: A look inside NJ United Mixed Martial Arts Academy

New blue belts at NJU

This week was packed with some awesome promotions at NJ United Mixed Martial Arts. The team has been training hard lately and it’s awesome to see everyone improve! Congratulations to Dave, Crew, and Rorie for receiving their blue belts in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu this week. Dave has been training with me since I was teaching in Hoboken in 2009. He has been a very dedicated and consistant student, always working to improve his jiu jitsu skills. Crew has been very consistant training and has refined is technique recently. He has performed also performed well in tournaments, bringing home quite a few medals during his run as a white belt. Rorie is a true martial artist and it was a pleasure to promote him to the rank of blue belt. Rorie has also brought home quite a few medals as a white belt, most recently winning 1st place at the Grapplers Challenge in Red Bank. Congrats guys!

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu basics

Our technique of the month is the elbow/knee escape from the mount position.  This technique is part of our BJJ 101 curriculum. The curriculum is designed to give each student a solid foundation of jiu jitsu (not just the fancy chokes, armlocks, and leg locks) and get them to achieve the rank of blue belt. The core of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is it’s defense and escapes….

Awesome day at NJU!

We had a great day of classes at NJ United MMA! The Little Ninjas had an action packed class and I am very impressed with the focus and hard work that everyone put in today. There were some great rolls in the adult no gi, mix levels, and BJJ 101 classes. And to top it off Crew and Dave received their blue belts in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu after mix levels class. Pictures coming soon…

Jiu Jitsu Competitions in NJ

Grapplers Quest consistantly holds one of the most competitive jiu jitsu competitions in NJ.  NJ United Mixed Martial Arts brought a strong team to compete over the 2 day weekend. We ended up with 11 medals total and more importantly everyone gained valuable experience from the “Beast of the East” tournament.

I’m so proud of everyone that competed! Everyone showed a ton of heart and left it all out on the mats.  Here are the results:
Steve: 1st purple belt, 3rd no gi advanced
Christina: 1st no gi intermediate, 1st no gi intermediate absolute, 2nd white belt lightweight, 2nd white belt absolute (4 medals …total!)
Brandon: 1st no gi novice, shared 1st place with teammate Matt at white belt
Matt: 1st white belt (closed out division with Brandon)
Luca: 3rd no gi intermediate
Crew: 3rd white belt
Jackie: 4th white belt
Dakota: 4th kids gi
I’m extremely proud of Damian, Lane, Xavier, and Adrian for going out there and having some awesome matches in their first tournaments ever! We’re going to work super hard and come back stronger next tournament! Congrats Moriah for doing awesome and winning 2nd place no gi beginner!

Friday class

Looking forward to BJJ 101 Friday morning at 11am, followed by Little Ninjas at 5:15pm and Muay Thai at 6pm. Lets push hard the last day of the week!

Congratulations Greg!

Congratulations to Greg for receiving his IBJJF (International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation) referee certificate this past weekend in NYC! Greg is one of the best (and most professional) referees in the country and it’s a pleasure to have him training at NJ United!

Great Weekend Training

It was a great weekend of training in at NJ United Mixed Martial Arts. We had a great Little Spartans class Saturday morning and got to spend some extra time working on our Muay Thai.  After a great class we finished up with some cardio and all the Little Spartans pushed extra hard!  Then after kids class I got some good training in with my good friend JT Torres. It’s always a pleasure to roll with JT whenever he can make a trip back home to NJ from Master Lloyd Irvin’s Headquarters in Camp Springs, MD. JT looks like he’s very focused on achieving his goal of becoming a 2012 Mundial World Champion. JT won the Bronze at the Worlds last year, and is looking to improve upon his performance by bringing home some GOLD this time around.

Sunday class was great! The mats were packed and everyone is looking great and really pushing themselves to get to the next level. The Sunday NJ United Soldiers have been consistantly putting the hard work in on the weekend for quite some time now. It’s great seeing everyone improve! I’m super excited and expecting big things in 2012 for NJ United.
