Totowa MMA: A look inside NJ United Mixed Martial Arts Academy

Team Lloyd Irvin on The Ultimate Fighter

Check out this season’s The Ultimate Fighter show on FX.  Team Lloyd Irvin’s Dominick Cruz (UFC Bantamweight Champion) is coaching one of the teams on this seasons show.  Dominick selected Master Lloyd Irvin and Wilson Reis to be coaches along with him on the show. I received my black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from Master Lloyd in 2009 and have trained with Wilson Reis for a few years. Go Team Lloyd Irvin/Dominick Cruz!

Jiu Jitsu in NJ

Learn to defend yourself ASAP, try Jiu Jitsu in NJ

Now you can train the most effective single martial art for self defense in the world right here in Totowa, New Jersey. NJ United Mixed Martial Arts will allow you to develop the necessary skills to defend yourself in a real life situation in our BJJ classes. The truth about self defense is that over 90% of altercations wind up on the groundIf you cannot defend yourself on the ground, then in reality, you cannot defend yourself.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu allows the smaller, weaker person to defeat the larger and stronger opponent with the use of superior positioning, allowing the jiu jitsu practitioner to utilize a variety of chokes, arm locks, leg locks, and other submissions. What separates jiu jitsu from most other martial arts is that gives the defender countless ways to defend, reverse, and attack the aggressor from every possible position, even if the victim is flat on their back!

NJ United MMA is the best academy for anyone looking for jiu jitsu in NJ. We accept students of all ages, from kids as young as 3 years old, to adult men and women. Our youngest student is in our Tiny Ninjas program, designed for 3-4 year olds, while we also have adult classes with students in their 50’s. If you’re not convinced that we offer the best jiu jitsu in NJ, then give us a call right NOW and try our classes for FREE for 30 days and let us prove to you why we are an academy like no other!

Jiu Jitsu Competition

Here is a video of NJ United Mixed Martial Arts head instructor Jay Hayes competing in the absolute division at the 2009 Pan American No Gi Jiu Jitsu Championships. The absolute division allows competitors from all weight classes to compete against one another to determine who is the “absolute” champion.

In the first round Jay faced tough BJJ Black Belt Luis Pantoja and won by submission after leading on points 6-0. Jay went on to win the Bronze medal at the ’09 Pan American No Gi Jiu Jitsu Championships, being the lightest competitor to make it to the medal podium.

Great UFC Party

Saturday night NJ United MMA watched UFC: Japan: Edgar vs. Henderson at what may now be the new UFC Party spot, Tiff’s in Pequannock, NJ. We had a good group of about 20 or so NJ United students that got together to enjoy some good food and great fights! I’m looking forward to catching the next event at Tiff’s with some more of the NJ United family!

Jiu Jitsu Competition

This afternoon I got to train with some of my friends including one of the best Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitors in the world, Rafael Lovato, Jr. Rafael is one of only two Americans to EVER win the Mundial World Championships in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The first and only other American to win the Worlds was former UFC lightweight and welterweight world champion BJ Penn, who won the gold in 2000. Rafael captured the gold medal in 2007 and along with my teammates JT Torres and Jimmy Harbison, are gunning to get their names included in the record books many more times in the future.

Getting on the mats with such a focused and skilled competitor makes me miss competing so much. The last time I competed was 2010 when I won the lightweight Head 2 Head Combat professional division. I’m confident in saying that I will be back competing again this year!
